A New Era in Indian Test Cricket

On May 24, 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian Test cricket team. At 25 years and 258 days old, Gill becomes the fifth-youngest player to assume this role, following the recent retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Test cricket.

Gill's leadership will commence with the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20, 2025, at Headingley, Leeds. This series marks the beginning of India's campaign in the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Leadership Selection and Vision

The decision to appoint Gill as captain was made with a long-term perspective. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized that the selection was not just for a single series but aimed at building a sustainable leadership framework. He noted Gill's growth and maturity over the past year, stating, "You don't pick captains for one or two tours. You want to invest in something that is going to help us going forward."

Despite his youth, Gill brings leadership experience from his tenure as captain of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League and leading India in a T20I series in Zimbabwe in 2024.

Vice-Captaincy and Squad Composition

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been named as the vice-captain for the England tour. Pant's consistent performance and ability to read the game have been cited as key factors in this decision.

The 18-member squad blends experience with fresh talent:

  • Batsmen: Shubman Gill (captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, B Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy
  • Wicketkeepers: Rishabh Pant (vice-captain), Dhruv Jurel
  • All-rounders: Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur
  • Bowlers: Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Ar...

Notably, Mohammed Shami has been excluded due to fitness concerns.

Strategic Considerations

Jasprit Bumrah, previously serving as vice-captain and occasional stand-in captain, was considered for the captaincy. However, the selectors decided against it to manage his workload and preserve his fitness, given his crucial role in the bowling attack.

The selection committee's approach reflects a strategic shift towards nurturing young leadership and ensuring the team's long-term success in the Test format.

Looking Ahead

India's Test series against England is scheduled as follows:

  1. 1st Test: June 20–24, Headingley, Leeds
  2. 2nd Test: June 28–July 2, Edgbaston, Birmingham
  3. 3rd Test: July 10–14, Lord's, London
  4. 4th Test: July 18–22, Old Trafford, Manchester
  5. 5th Test: July 30–August 4, The Oval, London

This series will be a significant test for Gill's leadership and the team's adaptability in the new era of Indian Test cricket.
