Severe Weather Causes Flight Disruptions at Delhi Airport
In the early hours of Sunday, May 25, 2025, a powerful thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall and wind speeds reaching up to 82 km/h struck Delhi-NCR, leading to significant disruptions at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). Between 11:30 PM and 4:00 AM, 49 flights, including 17 international ones, were diverted to other airports due to adverse weather conditions.
Additionally, approximately 200 flights experienced delays, with average wait times around 45 minutes. The India Meteorological Department reported that Delhi received 81.2 mm of rainfall during this period, causing widespread waterlogging and traffic congestion across the city.

Amid the severe weather, a portion of the external overhang at Terminal 1 of IGIA collapsed early Sunday morning. Visuals circulating on social media depicted the canopy buckling under the pressure of accumulated rainwater, crashing onto the pavement below.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) stated that the collapse was due to water accumulation and clarified that there was no structural compromise to other parts of the terminal. Swift action by ground teams ensured safety and continuity of operations with minimal disruption.
Passenger Advisory and Precautions
In response to the disruptions, DIAL issued an advisory urging passengers to check their flight status regularly and stay in contact with airline staff for the latest updates. IndiGo Airlines also communicated with passengers via social media, assuring them that flight operations were gradually resuming as weather conditions improved.
Passengers are advised to plan for additional travel time to the airport due to potential traffic congestion and to stay informed through official channels for any further updates.
