Monsoon Arrives Early in Mumbai, Breaking 75-Year Record
Mumbai experienced the earliest onset of the southwest monsoon in 75 years, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirming its arrival on May 26, 2025. This surpasses the previous record of May 29, noted in 1956, 1962, and 1971. The monsoon's early arrival was influenced by low-pressure systems over the Arabian Sea, leading to its swift progression into Maharashtra.
Record-Breaking Rainfall Disrupts City Life
On May 26, Mumbai recorded over 200 mm of rainfall in certain areas, shattering a 107-year-old record for the highest May rainfall. The IMD issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places.
Transportation Services Severely Affected
The heavy downpour led to significant disruptions in Mumbai's transportation network:
- Local Trains: Suburban train services on the Central and Western lines faced delays of 8–10 minutes due to reduced speeds amid low visibility.
- Metro Services: The newly inaugurated Acharya Atre Chowk underground metro station on Aqua Line 3 was flooded, leading to service suspension between Acharya Atre Chowk and Worli.
- Road Traffic: Several low-lying areas experienced waterlogging, causing traffic congestion and delays.
- Air Travel: Multiple flights were delayed or diverted due to adverse weather conditions.
Government Response and Public Advisory
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde reviewed the situation in affected regions, coordinating with disaster management officials. The IMD has issued a red alert effective until May 30, advising residents to stay indoors and exercise caution.
Precautionary Measures for Residents
